Antony of Egypt

Antony of Egypt
(c. 260–356)
   Saint and Mystic.
Antony was born in Como, Italy. At an early age, he retired into the desert to dedicate his life to God. There he is said to have wrestled with demons disguised as wild beasts. According to his biographer St athanasius, from c. 306 he began to gather disciples whom he organised into a community of hermits bound by a communal Rule. He came out of seclusion in 355 when he spoke out against the teachings of arius. He was an immensely popular saint in the Middle Ages. The Order of Hospitallers of St Antony was founded at the beginning of the twelfth century as a mendicant order and it spread throughout Western Europe. The temptations of St Antony are a popular subject for artists and he is regarded as having a particular interest in pigs and bells.
